Data la situazione qui vicino in Iran con le proteste scatenate da alcune donne e da tanti giovani che vogliono più libertà, lei appoggia questo impegno delle donne e degli uomini che chiedono di avere diritti fondamentali che si trovano anche nel documento della fraternità umana?
Ma dobbiamo dirci la verità. La lotta per i diritti della donna è una lotta continua. Perché in alcuni posti la donna arriva ad avere una uguaglianza con gli uomini. Ma in altri posti non si arriva. (…) E adesso ho messo Mariana Mazzucato, nella Pontificia Accademia per la Vita. Lei è una grande economista degli Stati Uniti, (l’ho messa) per dare un po’ più di umanità a questo. Le donne portano il suo. Non devono diventare come i maschi. No, sono donne, noi (ne) abbiamo bisogno. E una società che cancella le donne dalla vita pubblica è una società che si impoverisce. Si impoverisce. Uguaglianza di diritti, sì. Ma anche uguaglianza di opportunità. Uguaglianza di (possibilità) per andare avanti, perché al contrario ci si impoverisce. Credo che con questo ho detto quello che globalmente si deve fare. Ma ancora ci manca del cammino. Perché c’è questo maschilismo. Io vengo da un popolo maschilista. Gli argentini siamo maschilisti, sempre. E questo è brutto: ma poi ce ne andiamo dalle mamme che sono quelle risolvono i problemi. Ma questo maschilismo uccide l’umanità. Grazie di avermi dato l’opportunità di dire questo, che è (una cosa che) porto tanto nel cuore. Given the situation close by, in Iran, with the protests sparked by some women and many young people who want more freedom, do you support this effort of women and men demanding to have the basic rights that are also found in the Document on Human Fraternity?
Pope Francis: We have to tell each other the truth. The struggle for women's rights is an ongoing struggle. Because in some places women have equality with men, but not in other places. (…) And now I have put Mariana Mazzucato in the Pontifical Academy for Life. She is a great economist from the United States, I put her there to give a little more humanity to it.
Women carry their own, they don't have to become like males. No! they are women, we need them. And a society that erases women from public life is a society that impoverishes itself.
