A New International Declaration for the Humanization of Medicine
Through the international campaign Thank You Doctor!, in collaboration with the Pontifical Academy for Life, we present our new Declaration on the Rediscovery of the Primary Care Physician and the Humanization of Health Systems, a global call that places the doctor–patient relationship at the center of healthcare transformation.
This Declaration has been developed with the participation of citizens from different cultures, traditions, beliefs, and social contexts, based on a shared conviction: all people have the right to dignified, accessible, close, and high-quality healthcare. This right must ensure not only the treatment of illness, but also comprehensive care of the person throughout their entire life.
In this context, we reaffirm the irreplaceable role of the family doctor as the first point of access to the healthcare system and as a key figure in continuity of care, prevention, and coordination.
We understand the primary care physician not only as a clinical professional, but also as a close companion who understands the patient within their vital, family, and social context. This relationship of trust, built over time, allows for more personalized, effective, and humane care.
We also highlight the importance of strengthening a healthcare culture based on prevention, health education, and early detection, essential elements for improving quality of care and the sustainability of health systems.
From the campaign, we also express concern about the progressive weakening of the doctor–patient relationship, resulting from excessive workload, bureaucratization, and lack of recognition of healthcare professionals. This situation affects not only doctors, but also directly impacts the quality of care patients receive.
Therefore, we make an urgent call to rediscover and strengthen the role of the family doctor as a fundamental element for the humanization of medicine and social cohesion. Their closeness, vocation, and continuity in care make them a key reference in moments of greatest vulnerability.
We also recognize the intrinsic dignity of every person, which must be respected in every healthcare interaction through listening, respect, and comprehensive care. The family doctor, due to their privileged position, plays a fundamental role in making this dignity visible in daily practice.
We also value the role of families and communities as essential spaces of care, where the family doctor acts as an agent of support and social cohesion.
At the same time, we express concern about the conditions under which many primary care physicians work, marked by excessive workload, lack of resources, and insufficient recognition—factors that directly impact the quality of the healthcare system.
Through this Declaration, Thank You Doctor!, together with the Pontifical Academy for Life, make a joint call to institutions, policymakers, and social actors to strengthen primary care and once again place the doctor–patient relationship at the center of health systems.
We are supported by organizations such as SOMOS Community Care, the Dr. Ramon Tallaj Foundation, and other international entities in the healthcare and civil society sectors.
We reaffirm our conviction that a healthcare system centered on the family doctor is more humane, fair, and efficient, capable of responding to people’s real needs and building a future based on care, responsibility, and solidarity.
