Webinar "Thresholds of Life: Ethical Reflections on Viability Today"
On Tuesday May 19, 2026 the Pontifical Academy for Life organises a full day scientific webinar on the limit of viability. This still represents one of the most complex and debated issues in contemporary bioethics and is closely linked to advances in neonatal critical care. The anticipation of this threshold has expanded survival opportunities for extremely preterm infants, while simultaneously raising critical questions concerning long-term outcomes, quality of life, and the impact of clinical decision-making on families and society. These challenges are further intensified by profound socio-economic inequalities across healthcare systems. Access to care at the limits of viability varies substantially according to available resources, healthcare system models, and the availability of advanced medical technologies. Given that the majority of births worldwide occur in low- and middle-income countries, such disparities raise pressing concerns related to equity, justice, and ethical responsibility at a global level. This webinar aims to provide a forum for interdisciplinary reflection and dialogue, integrating clinical, bioethical, and social perspectives to foster more informed and responsible decision-making in neonatal care at the limits of viability.
Registrations will be free of charge and available online.
